The Borneo Project

World Background

Intro by Karlysle Random (Pronounced Car-lile, ryhmes with "Mile")

The world we live in is dark. It is what we call the "real" world. Sure, those above us live outside of the darkness, but they are not of our kind. They are the rich, the ones who think they have power. Power. That means something completely different down here. Here, power is grasped roughly by the scruff of it's neck by The Factions. Power from above means nothing. They can make their laws, give their titles, but it all means nothing down here. Here, you must just stay alive. You need someone to protect you, and that's who the Factions are. They will protect you from those outside of their own. Of course, if you join up with one of them, then the two other Factions have something more to gain by killing you than just the wallet off your belt. That's why so many die: power stuggles between the Factions. That's why I'm here. That's why my father isn't.

World Description

The game takes place in a world totally underground. The majority of the world is a great city, where everything happens. The city is structured veritcally, with the government departments located on top, near the only major water source. Water is channelled down between the different platforms, forming waterfalls and rivers on each. The area below the government area is the "civilized" part of the city. In this area, the government hold power. They enforce their laws and protect their peple.

Below this is the "real world". The water supply enters this area at one major location, always held by one faction or another. In this realm, the government holds no power, and is respected by none of it's inhabitants, but will expend as much effort as necessary to aprehend crimals who infringe upon those who are above them. Here, three factions fight in a ruthless war for power, regulated only by eachother.

Below it all is the darkest area. This is what we would call a "Slums", it is the Underworld. Here, no group holds power, and it is inhabited only by the ultra poor, or those hiding from the reach of the government or sometimes the Factions. There are two ways to survive in the underworld: 1) be so weak and have so little of value it isn't worth it to kill you, or 2) be cunning, master the magical arts, and become a lethal killer.

"Technical Details"

Along with the natural water source at the top of the city that is channeled, there are smaller springs that enter the city at random locations along the side. The water is eventually channeled out of the city though a tunnel that goes deeper into the earth.

There are long tunnels that go off in pretty much all directions, but most civilization lives in the city.

Food is generated mostly from plants that live in the waterways. The plants do not require light to live, and are therefore not necessarily green. Some food is also generated from beasts that roam the tunnels far from the city. Light is produced from artificial sources, but there are also plants that produce a limited amount of light. The largest source of artificial light is controlled by the governemt, and is filtered down to different areas of the civilized part of the city.

The Three Factions

#1 The Corporation. This is the faction the player is a member of at the begining of the game. It is ran by a "CEO" and a "board of directors," in which each director has equal input, and everything is ultimately decided by group concensous. They are primarily interested in accumulating power by financial situations (trading, etc).

#2 Chaos. This faction is ran by a single leader, who gained his position by killing the leader before him. They function erratically, and crave destruction. They seek power by holding a military stranglehold over the commoners.

#3 Greens. This faction is primarily interested in protecting themselves and the natural resources. They currently control power over the waterflow into the "real world." They are ran by a democratic system with a president making the ultimate decisions.

Character Descriptions

Karlysle Random

The main character that the player plays

Karlysle recently joined the Corp. His father had served the Corp. faithfully and he was a good man. He died in a clash with the Government. Karlysle feels, like many others, that the government is irrelevant - the Corp. has always regulated his home sectore of the city, and the Factions regulate everthing in the "real" world. Karlysle is fairly introverted. He is handsome, maybe dashing, but not a "stud." He has never really been in love. He has dark hair, medium to shoulder length. He favors the monoblade (a type of sword) and a laser rifle in combat.
